MANAGER APPOINTMENT

We are very pleased to announce that the Directors have now appointed Mr David Lewis to be our Manager.  Many of you will have already met him since he has been serving as a volunteer over the past few weeks. We are sure you will make him welcome. He hopes you will let him know if there are any particular goods or suppliers you would like to recommend.

ON-GOING SERVICES

Weekend orders for greengrocery

We should like to remind you that you can still order weekend boxes of vegetables and fruit.  Details and order forms are available in the shop, or on this website. Orders to be in by Thursday 10.00am and boxes ready from Friday mid-day..As with all products, the more we purchase the more competitive the prices will be. Most vegetables are locally grown and collected from farms by Chris Parsons of Grange Farm Shop.  He is also open to specific requests or quantities for a special event. Other imported fruit and vegetables come from Lincolnshire wholesalers. See Order Forms

 Dry Cleaning Service

Snowflake Laundry who visit Barrowden every Thursday also offer a high quality dry cleaning service. They accept a wide range of clothes, bedding, soft furnishings. A complete price list is available in the shop. Articles will be accepted at the shop on Wednesday ready for collection on Thursday and will be returned to the shop the following Thursday.

Home Baked Cakes

Two high quality, well experienced home cake and pastry makers are currently supplying the shop. Their cakes are available most weekends.

Many enjoyed a tasting morning with one cook, Ann Bodily, in January.

It is hoped these additional services will be helpful to many. Go to Info from suppliers

How many days shall we be open?

Remember! The shop and other parts will only be open for the times for which we have volunteers. Many have kindly said that they are willing to help, but only a few have signed up for a particular time slot. If you are willing to offer a few hours whether occasionally or on a regular basis, please phone Alison Last on 747 828, or Kay Bagshaw on 747 563. Between them they co-ordinate the rota. They will tell you all you need to know. Please help them to fill up the rota. It would be sad to have to close up for a couple of hours for lack of a phone call. Alternatively call the shop on 748 748. The Summer when many are away on holiday is a specially difficult time! Please offer soon!

We had the bunting out for the start of trading of August 13th, and again for the Official Launch by the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland on November 6th

Visitors to the Shop Launch enjoying the displays

Our Launch Day was Friday 6th November, 2009. The Guest of Honour was no  less than the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Lawrence Howard. There were greetings from those who have backed and supported us, the prayer of the Rector, and the encouragement of a large number of people from our own two villages of Barrowden and Wakerley and surrounding communities.

Above is the plaque which is now in the Shop
after being unveiled  by the Lord Lieutenant. He was welcomed by the Steering Group Chairman, Mrs Sheila Saunders, and after untying the ribbon across the wrought-iron gates, he went into the Shop to be greeted and shown round by our Manager, Tricia Lipton.

He spoke appreciatively of the effort put in by so many to get the Shop this far and wished us well for the future. Our Rector, the Revd Geoff Angell prayed for God's blessing on the venture, and Mrs Jacqui Shorley, who has advised the Steering Group over various applications for grants, added her greetings and good wishes.

Dr Howard then went outside through the newly-finished garden to plant a tree to commemorate his visit.

In the Village Hall refreshments had been prepared for everybody, and various of our suppliers took the opportunity to show us some of the other products they have, in addition to those we already sell. It was good to be able to welcome representatives
from some of the many organisations that have helped us financially, or by gifts in kind, or who have worked on the site as contractors. Our two County Councillors joined us, as did available members of the Parish Council.

Happily, the rain held off and everyone could not only enjoy the Shop itself, but also the specially-designed garden as well as the other planted areas. The signs at each end of the building had been put in place the previous afternoon, and many volunteers had played their part in preparing the whole site for visitors, and for everybody's use and enjoyment.

What remains now is for us all to benefit from the stock in the Shop and to enjoy meeting one another
whether as volunteers, customers or visitors.

Quiz question: When did the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland last come to Barrowden for any occasion?

Answer:........ It was on 16th November 2002, when Sir Jock Kennedy came to mark the Recreation Ground Wall Restoration in honour of the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Our thanks to Miggs Bonnor for calling attention to the photograph in the Village Hall recording this.
