Welcome

At last it has happened. Our Community Shop has been trading for three months, and now we have also been fully launched. The Day was Friday 6th November, 2009. The Guest of Honour was no  less than the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Lawrence Howard. There were greetings from those who have backed and supported us, the prayer of the Rector, and the encouragement of a large number of people from our own two villages of Barrowden and Wakerley and surrounding communities.

Above is the plaque which is now in the Shop
after being unveiled  by the Lord Lieutenant. He was welcomed by the Steering Group Chairman, Mrs Sheila Saunders, and after untying the ribbon across the wrought-iron gates, he went into the Shop to be greeted and shown round by our Manager, Tricia Lipton.

He spoke appreciatively of the effort put in by so many to get the Shop this far and wished us well for the future. Our Rector, the Revd Geoff Angell prayed for God's blessing on the venture, and Mrs Jacqui Shorley, who has advised the Steering Group over various applications for grants, added her greetings and good wishes.

Dr Howard then went outside through the newly-finished garden to plant a tree to commemorate his visit.

In the Village Hall refreshments had been prepared for everybody, and various of our suppliers took the opportunity to show us some of the other products they have, in addition to those we already sell. It was good to be able to welcome representatives
from some of the many organisations that have helped us financially, or by gifts in kind, or who have worked on the site as contractors. Our two County Councillors joined us, as did available members of the Parish Council.

Happily, the rain held off and everyone could not only enjoy the Shop itself, but also the specially-designed garden as well as the other planted areas. The signs at each end of the building had been put in place the previous afternoon, and many volunteers had played their part in preparing the whole site for visitors, and for everybody's use and enjoyment.

What remains now is for us all to benefit from the stock in the Shop and to enjoy meeting one another
whether as volunteers, customers or visitors.

Quiz question: When did the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland last come to Barrowden for any occasion?

Answer:........ It was on 16th November 2002, when Sir Jock Kennedy came to mark the Recreation Ground Wall Restoration in honour of the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Our thanks to Miggs Bonnor for calling attention to the photograph in the Village Hall recording this.

Read more about the beautiful village of Barrowden in the delightful County of Rutland on the village's own website.  See www.villagelinks.co.uk   The Community Shop is most grateful to the Barrowden Village web-site and its editors for their kindness in hosting pages for us in the past. Now that we have our own web-site it seems simplest for us to edit our content directly rather than needing to involve the Village's editors each time. Thank you for all their help to Caroline and Iain McBain. (Any errors or inadequacies in the web-site are ours alone now. Ouch!)

Welcome to the Barrowden and Wakerley Community Shop!   We are a shop located in the beautiful Rutland village of Barrowden.  But we want to be more than just a shop - we provide a range of services to the local community.  Find out more About us

Some of the attractive goodies on display as you enter the shop. Not everything stays in the same place all the time, but it is all still there somewhere. If you can't see it, please ask! What better than fresh bread and newly-delivered milk to start the day. Soft drinks and cordials are on the back wall, some chilled ready to drink. Dairy produce is in the chiller at the back of this photo. But come and see for yourself!

A view of the coffee and chat area. Coffees, chocolate or teas can be ordered from the counter, and perhaps a piece of cake too. Then sit and chat, or perhaps buy a paper or magazine from the rack to the left of the photo. The art works on the walls are all by local residents and available for sale. Just the thing for that special gift. The computers are there, and ready for action. All we ask is a thoughtful donation for overall shop funds. Now you can also print or copy a letter, laminate a document, or go on line. The bookcase to the right of the photo holds the swap area. Bring in a CD, a DVD, a video or a jigsaw. If one given by someone else takes your fancy, put  the money in the tin and enjoy! Books will continue to be handled by the Village Hall, who pioneered this pattern, overseen first by Jennifer Bailey and now by David Bagshaw.
